Is there a name for this phenomenon? I’m always amazed when people in terrible financial circumstances vote against things that would help them because one day they “may” be rich. I’ve never understood this.

very American, but not *only* American. Many non-US people here think they’re gonna make it one day too In general, modern life is all about the end result rather than doing things for the process
