So apparently Japan changed their money over the summer and I almost lost it at the ATM and had to stand there googling it like an idiot to make sure I wasnβt crazy. Top is new. Iβm loving the wave on the back. Canβt wait to get more change and see what the other notes look like in person. Japan used to be very cash heavy, covid helped accelerate touch-less credit cards but most small businesses and temples are still cash. Itβs strange because IC cards (electronic transit cards) are useable at most vending machines so Iβm always caught off guard when I canβt pay with it and thrilled when I can unexpectedly. Now that I can reload my card with Apple Pay I rarely go to the ATM.

I was in Japan pre-covid and it was such a unique experience needing to pay in cash for everything. Being able to pay with the IC and reload it via your phone, would be so different. Can't wait to get back and have that experience.

Itβs definitely life changing. Before you had to load cash at the machines! It was crazy. Having the card on my phone is magical.
