his thesis though is: 'all of us who get into creative work, we do it because we have good taste' - i think is just an attempt to flatter the reader. we know that's not true.

I think heโ€™s talking about people who stick around through the struggle, not the dilettantes But I agree that good taste is uncommon and most people just like what is trendy

he's addressing it to beginners in the first sentence ๐Ÿ˜… . i think ira is just trying to be good-guy ira and do his version of a graduation thing. but i've always had a suspicion this little essay enabled a whole generation of bad artists though; people who've never interrogated whether they have good taste or not
