Please don’t let anyone gatekeep you from matcha. You don’t need to drink ceremonial grade matcha. You can add milk and sugar and make matcha lattes. Any matcha is better than no matcha. However, please DO NOT pay a lot of money for marketing and BS. True matcha from Japan is seasonal and has a very short shelf life. Most stuff you are probably buying online is middle range and should be priced appropriately. Most people really can’t taste the difference between different grades of matcha unless they are side by side. Come to the matcha side. But don’t break the bank to do so.

heading to Tokyo in a week, can't wait to stock up! mid matcha branded on fancy websites to sell to unsuspecting customers in the US are the worst

PS any matcha you buy even in a regular Japanese grocery store is probably 10x better than anything you can buy online :) @beecurious might know stores in Tokyo if you want to get really fancy, but most people are making matcha lattes and don’t need super fancy deluxe matcha for tea ceremonies.

Seriously. I see a lot of slick marketing and I know that they are selling frozen shit because I was in Uji 9 days ago and that type of matcha is seasonal and not for sale. It’s despicable but they can do it because it’s exotic.
