Interesting take from Pieter Levels on how learning to code today involves sifting through dozens of VC/corporate-funded devfluencers pushing newbie devs toward certain “open-source” frameworks, with the ultimate goal of having them host their startup on proprietary, closed-source and often overly-expensive infrastructure. “It’s like lobbying.” https://x.com/chfsrh/status/1826314475860840500

it’s one of those things that sounds smart and means nothing. yes today we have a lot more vc backed dev focused companies producing content but some of the largest dev tools of yesteryears coexisted with oss and had similar sitch: java (sun v openjdk), c (so many incl aapl), basic (gw, quick, borland turbo), .net (msft, mono), fortran (ibm, cray), python (psf, msft, anaconda)… i can keep going. php+c at facebook or python at google were a choice b/c US academia stuck to stallman/oss ethos. India, Middle East schools were diff story where msft (be it ms c++) dominated. i was a msft student partner doing evangelism. i think @sriramk.eth was too!
