my issue with frames isn’t with the protocol but with the implementations. server times out for >50% of my attempts to use them. is this because image generation is too onerous on the backend? or other reasons? how do we make frames perform better? can we make a frame with no images?

Not sure this is the kind of thing you're looking for, but I find inconsistency between mobile and web version is a bit annoying, especially because you cannot find a user's NFTs easily (at all?) on the web version.
