I've been consulting on a lot of projects recently, so I used Claude 3.5 to make myself a little time-tracker that automatically shows the $ earned in real time 💸 It's open source! https://github.com/nicktikhonov/briefcase

pretty brilliant way to ensure that you never forget to track your time again. also highlights how misaligned the incentives are in hourly billing.

compared to project-based where price is tied to value rather than hours spent. for example, if i complete the job faster, i shouldn't get paid less.

Anecdotally disagree - I've tried fixed-term contracts and found that the incentive is for the clients to never be quite satisfied and continue asking for iterations.

that is a risk, but there are ways to manage this. part of it is skillful proposal writing, and then billing hourly for revisions beyond the scope. client management is difficult and requires practice, but can make projects much more profitable and less stressful.
