Trump says he’s raising tariffs on China to 125% and reducing tariffs on other countries to 10% for 90 days.

I’m confused β€” is it a pause? Or reduction? And do the 🐧 still have to pay?

insofar as they're a proxy exporter... gray market shipping is a mess.

They are literally penguins β€” there are no people or ports so no trade & no need for tariffs but yes it’s all a mess

I disagree, it was very obvious that such an export arbitrage would take place.

how????? No trade occurs there at all. And these were called RECIPROCAL tariffs β€” there was no tariff because no trade. It was absolutely not intentionalβ€” it was an error

like I said, gray market shipping is an absolute mess. just look at flags of convenience, and the resulting drama with Panama. there was no point making an exception for those islands because there's already precedent with atoll shenanigans. why waste time and effort on the wonky content when the catchphrase spreads so much further? I think it's great that the gambit is up for debate. then again, considering all moving parts, let's wait and see.

If there are no ports, there’s no export & no tariffs. It was laziness clearly β€” the whole approach to was ai generated laziness with a nonsensical β€œformula”—but there’s no actual way for this to happen with those particular locations. I get what you’re saying but it’s just not the case here.

I disagree that there are no ports, considering that such a structure can be deployed within days https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/cmsi-notes/14/

Right now in this moment there are no ports. Could Australia make the two week shipping journey to create them? Sure. So in this moment there is no trade, no potential for trade and no tariffs imposed on the US therefore no need for reciprocal tariffs. Law is not supposed to work in hypotheticals. It’s why courts don’t allow moot cases β€” so what I’m saying is tariffs like this likely would not even hold up in court. (And there are so many other legal issues on these) So again was totally unnecessary and clearly wasn’t intentionalβ€” they didn’t want to take the time to look at every country individually. So here we are. 🐧

yeah, interesting challenge. maybe there'll be litigation, maybe nothing will happen. but I simply do not see the substantial, not circumstantial evidence that this is unnecessary and unintentional. it's an executive order, not legislation, and of course it's arbitrary and meant to force negotiation. mostly just words, really. let's wait and see.
