What do you think Ryan Breslow did that was so different that made him stand out?

I abandoned the data privacy project because it was clear that all any enterprise wanted to do in the name of data privacy was post a sign that says “your data is secure” but they didn’t want to actually do anything along that path

The project before that was called Unoceros, we built distributed computing on a network of mobile phones. Theres a lot I could say about that project, and probably should, at some point. I will say this, it worked, it was bonkers, and I failed at championing that which we knew to be correct

I love the fact you always want to an impact. Something I actually admire. 

Your drive is crazyyyy, working on a project for that long. 

How come I never heard about the older projects? The one you didn’t abandon, where is that now? 

And besides what made you abandon the other one, you weren’t seeing results you wanted?

🤷‍♂️ same way you walk by a donut shop and don’t rush in and binge yourself to death. Discipline and self control are very undervalued, especially by VCs 😂

Even though you might be right, how do you convince a project to ignore a readily available huge VC funding to an uncertain generated revenue ?

It’s perceived as the path of least resistance, but that’s simply because the future is being discounted too heavily

This is going to sound like a flippant answer, but it’s not. You need to figure out how to start that business without money first. If you can’t figure out how to create value from nothing, yet, then the real answer is go do some hands on learning first. Go knock on doors and sell something, it’s probably one of the most valuable ways to learn a handful of necessary skills you’re going to rely on in a startup

But what if you don’t have the necessary funds and getting a loan is difficult ?

There’s nothing wrong with taking it, learning something’s, building a business, selling it. Do that, if that’s what you want to do and you have an option, maybe take it. If you want to build and amazing thing, service, whatever, then a monetary shortcut mostly seems to hinder or become mutually exclusive to such endeavors. 

What’s the right choice for you to make is dependent upon a lot of things much more personal, not my quasi rant above. Why I vocalize the views I do, is because I don’t believe we need more cheesedick VC funded software that doesn’t actually serve customers that well, and appears a lot more like digital detritus to me than value creation. Build a mediocre thing for 2-4 years, sell to bigger company that’s actually just an acqui-hire, they never integrate the product and instead just kill it. You make money, you learn some incorrect lessons for how to make any real product, but you do learn the VC and corporate game so you could keep that machine going

Yes, you’ll learn far more. There is a very concise formula which handles VC money particularly well, which is also now influx due to macroeconomics and performance metrics, otherwise it’s retarded to take VC. 

It’s hard af to build something 10 people want, the last thing a builder needs is some mouth breather standing around them spewing go for a billion user brain brain damage

Get 10 people to pay for a thing and you’re probably almost making money if you bootstrap and you’ll learn new things you pretended you knew before you built the thing

So if I had a startup, your advice would be to bootstrap?

absolutely, revenue often offers more sustainable growth and valuable insights compared to vc funding 

it does encourage focus on building a solid business model and customer base
longterm success often comes from understanding and meeting your market's needs, which revenue driven strategies can better support

Far too many founders use vc money to find pmf. They should only raise if they need to scale a validated idea. It's that simple.

I get where you’re coming from but most times it’s hard to resist cause of the huge amount of money these VCs are offering 
Not everyone might be able to resist it 
Would you completely advise not to ever take the VC funding ? 
Or just when it’s long term
