How does the monthly subscription work on a technical level? Is it prepaid? Does it require smart contract wallets? How does it ensure subscribers pay every month?

Got it. I'm somewhat frustrated with the constant push to subscriptions for everything these days, so I like prepaid or fixed-term from a subscriber perspective. Though in the long run having ongoing monthly payments via smart contract wallets as an option will be good also.

same. monthly recurring credit card payments will be live by end of q1 (for those into that sort of thing)

Yeah, not sure I want to do this at this time. The problem with a subscription is you actually have to deliver value on an ongoing basis, and that's too much commitment for me at this time. (I still have a day job that needs to take precedence.)
