I think the advice here is good, but but I think it’s a mistake to start a blog on someone else’s platform (i.e. Substack). I’ve blogged on blogger, Tumblr, Medium, and Substack. None of them compare to the authenticity of writing that lives on my site under my control. https://www.henrikkarlsson.xyz/p/start-a-blog

What’s the difference? Why does writing on your own platform make it more authentic? The typical person who wants to blog just wants to write, post it, get the link and share with his/her people without worry about the intricacies of managing the platform etc.

Because platforms are designed for views. Platforms encourage their writers to change their writing style and try to write to the widest possible audience. Medium and Substack are very guilty of this with their email drop campaigns teaching writers “how to write”
