I recommend checking out anthropologist David Graeber’s renowned book Debt: The First 5000 Years. I wrote a similar piece to yours years ago, and later learned that the “barter system” did not actually precede money. That is a made up idea for which no historical anthropological evidence exists. Instead, barter is used almost always in systems where there is already a currency to correlate values of assets to.

I came here to say the exact same thing. This timeline is a construction that doesn't really match reality of what historians found. One of the very interesting part of Graeber's book is that debt precedes money where we usually believe that debt and lending is a byproduct of money.

Yeah this is one of the core premises of the book and such an important and underrepresented detail in the common knowledge. I strongly believe that having an accurate understanding of history can help us shape the future more effectively ☺️
