Because people who made these rules drove on the right lane on roads. If you have someone in front of you, they're on the left lane for you. To prevent collision you have to go right otherwise you cross the left lane and hit them. People carry this reflex even in the sky. Turning right has chances to be wired in a shorted brain circuit and you will then react faster than if your brain has to think about what side you have to turn when in the air. One rule for all vehicles makes it easier to become a reflex.
