it baffles me that macbooks still don't have 5G receivers why do i need to use my phone as a hotspot?

Whole different FCC approval process. You would need to offer WiFi-only devices like the iPad. That means a huge amount of bandwidth devoted to designing for a much more complex machine. Probably not worth the lift when most people wouldn’t opt for it. That’s why they have the iPad Pro imo.
