the m4 mbp maxes out at 128GB unified memory? lame i want at least 256GB

wouldn’t be surprised if we get m4 ultra and 256gb for the mac studio allegedly dropping this summer

i don’t understand why there isn’t a 1TB unified memory mac studio

1TB system memory would be dual or quad CPU territory in a traditional build, i.e. a server build with ECC memory. with single CPU Intel or AMD you would hit chipset memory controller limits at 128GB or maybe 256GB. Apple Silicon architecture means CPU/GPU/system memory/neural eng directly on the SoC, which has performance advantages since they all share that unified memory but then thermal limits as a result. harder to shove more and more memory onto the same SoC without hitting thermal issues, esp. for a small form factor like the studio. I would expect the M4 studio to top out at either 128GB or 256GB, but maybe a new Mac Pro could have higher levels of expandability.

we’ll see. wouldn’t be surprised if they’re holding back higher memory configs for m5/6 so they look differentiated

for MBP and studio form factor, thermals are definitely an issue we haven’t seen an M4 Ultra chip yet, but if it followed the M2 Max vs. M2 Ultra pattern it would basically be two M4 Max chips with a bridge between. for the M2 Ultra, that allowed them to up system memory from 96GB to 192GB. so I’d expect a similar progression from 128GB to 256GB for M4 Max to M4 Ultra
