forums! do u still use any forums regularly? i used to visit a bunch of art, music, and other forums but not much anymore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "When I want information, like the real stuff, I go to forums [...] there is just certain information that requires the dedication of adults who have specifically signed up to be in one kind of community." i feel like channels here are trying to reach something like this but imo wc channels are missing one crucial feature for this: chrono reply bumping as immediate visual feedback to let u know a conversation is happening within a channel cast (⌒_⌒;) https://aftermath.site/best-active-forums-internet-today

I don’t think we’ll ever get there with current cast storage model. I looked for a reply chain of mine the other day and while I found my responses, the person I talked to let their casts expire ;_;

This is one of many reasons why I think decentralized social will forever remain an experiment.

well one could pay for that persons storage via an aggregated archival service. Say that archiver provides you all your data that you want and the fee you pay includes a fixed fee that is dedicated to keeping storage costs of these users paid. over the whole archival service one can then aggregate and keep the storage relevant.

Paying for other people’s storage doesn’t scale. However, spreading out the costs sounds like it could work.

it's not paying 1:1 it's aggregated. say 100 people use it and we factor 2 storage units per subscription, then there are 200 storage units total that can be aggregated and if some users require less or some users are shared across then it spreads well
