Are there any ideologically driven people involved in Solana? My impression is it’s pure mercenary: decentralization and open source are not taken seriously.

Ideological, absolutely. But it’s a very different ideology, with a history of being focused on improving efficiency and access to financial markets, specifically through hardware acceleration. Quite different to say OG Bitcoin cypherpunk ideals or Etherean techno-optimism around social coordination.

Imo, this sums it up very well and explains why the vibes feel off to most OG Blockchain ideologists. To me, Solana seems built to embrace the new class of elites they are creating. It'll increase accessibility to financial markets that more efficiently funnel wealth to this new oligarchy. So, more of the same.
