What better day to talk about Reefnet fishing than on #NationalGoFishingDay? Reefnet fishing is a traditional, sustainable fishing method used by Indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Coast Salish tribes. It involves setting up a net system over tidal channels where salmon naturally migrate. Fishers use floating platforms and underwater nets anchored to the sea floor. Spotters, often perched on high platforms, signal when a school of fish approaches, and the nets are then raised to trap the salmon. This method allows for selective harvesting, minimizing bycatch and preserving fish populations. โ€“โ€“ Join Salish Center for Sustainable Fishing Methods at the annual Reefnet Festival on August 17 for a day of fun in the sun by the water! Enjoy live music featuring The Atlantics, food booths (including Pike Place Chowder), a beer garden, arts & crafts, an educational booth, wild salmon, boat rides to the reefnet, and more!ย ย  Tickets: https://salishcenter.org/reefnet-festival/
