More than 80 orcas were captured in Penn Cove near Puget Sound in August 1970. Seven were sold to marine parks, and at least 5 died. The Southern resident orca population are critically endangered. What better day to talk about Reefnet fishing than on #NationalGoFishingDay? Reefnet fishing is a traditional, sustainable fishing method used by Indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Coast Salish tribes. It involves setting up a net system over tidal channels where salmon naturally migrate. Fishers use floating platforms and underwater nets anchored to the sea floor. Spotters, often perched on high platforms, signal when a school of fish approaches, and the nets are then raised to trap the salmon. This method allows for selective harvesting, minimizing bycatch and preserving fish populations. –– Join Salish Center for Sustainable Fishing Methods at the annual Reefnet Festival on August 17 for a day of fun in the sun by the water! Enjoy live music featuring The Atlantics, food booths (including Pike Place Chowder), a beer garden, arts & crafts, an educational booth, wild salmon, boat rides to the reefnet, and more!
