Emile (or, “On Education”) by JJ Rousseau + unreal analysis of parenting from first principles + reflection on the purpose of modern learning + exploration of nature (+ limits) of democratic citizenship + clearest statement of Rousseaus theology + critique of property that shaped Marx + laugh-out-loud funny

Is funny that Rousseau gave his kids away yet here he is writing an account on parenting... If i recall correctly he identified babies as little tyrants or so, a theme picked up by Martha Nussbaum as well in her Monarchy of Fear. It just makes so much sense to think of it that way because they can't help it being so helpless.

I’m sure his reasoning was complicated, but he was clearly not virtuous on a personal level. His point about the tyranny of children is super interesting though. Primarily: it doesn’t HAVE to be this way. He is telling parents how to raise a kid that can be compatible with democracy. I find this part compelling.
