@nic I think licorice is a pretty northern European thing. Very popular in northern Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark (Denmark even has a liquorice liqueur) and the whole of Scandinavia.

Kuhbonbon Lakritz is also nice. 

And not a soft one, but if you can find the Licorice Lolli coated with dark chocolate, those are my all-time fave.
