I started watching the documentary "Civilization: A Personal View by Kenneth Clark", through a recommendation from @gokhan.eth.

It made me realize that I had never really looked into the end of the Roman Empire (end of civilization), the world after, Christianity after the fall and the barbarians in particular.

Peter Turchin has a decent thesis on the decline of civilizations. The Roman empire is one of his examples :) you might enjoy reading some of his works if you like to learn more.

I just recently read his End Times..great exploration of the topic of why great societies disintegrate.
