agree generally, most outsiders don’t see it as “reclaimed” (in which case imo it’s important to have convos with them about the original artist and his efforts and intentions instead of just giving up) but like others said context also matters, like when it’s being used in protests, or when we are making it specifically in art about crypto (which i have done - onlymemes, beanie babies), i also agree with whoever said apu has a different vibe

💯 In liberal-left spaces, the pepe meme is an instant turn-off. It's associated with alt-right trolls. And there are a lot of people who won't try to move past that association to get to know the community here better because there have been so very many toxic interactions with people touting pepe.

Don’t know when you posted this but I’m glad I’m seeing it now. I avoid all things Pepe and have had some serious arguments about it on CT. It turns my stomach. I can’t stand it. And I’m glad I’m not the only one.

I feel like the apu Pepe has a bit of a different vibe to it, don’t feel like it has as many connections to the alt right as the original Pepe. The fact that connection still exists however is cause for concern. As an aside, we could try inventing our own meme/mascot as a replacement, one that has the same welcoming vibes as apu but with a cleaner rep.

pepe was never about adoption. it's about inside jokes and exclusion... a way to fortify a group through meme. Using pepe to drive public adoption is farting in the wind. It's _Supposed_ to keep others away.

Contrary hot take - I saw and used Pepe memes long before I ever heard of any negative / alt right association. The original creator had no bad intentions either so I think it's strange to have to distance from it. Also I think only extremely online people understand those nuances and most people I know IRL probably don't even know or care what Pepe is 😂
