binji is right and maybe i do too much yelling. but evidently the yelling is not enough to get it through to people. so it will be mass bans. i dont know what to do about degen allos. they are the only thing you people are capable of talking about. post after post of nothing else. no content at all. it blows

"post after post of nothing" is exactly why social incentives are so dangerous - they are incredibly effective for generating *volume*, but algorithms can only approximate what "good" volume really is

so, eventually people find a meta of minimum input -> max incentive reward, and the ecosystem goes sideways. (cont)

currently as i understand it, you can pay warps to create channels, & management of that channel somewhat falls on your shoulders. there's some expectation of moderation of the channel (even if not literal implication, you paid to create it so likely want it to not fall apart)

it's def in your interests not to (cont)

bar the public from casting in it, but so long as these social growthhacks exist, they're gonna do what tervo is struggling with in tweet 1: they are going to incentivize an imperfect version of what "good" content is (because human taste is really hard to define narrowly in airdrop criteria !!) cont

so you get a load of "no content" posts.

now, as I discussed with @cameron yday, farcaster doesn't prioritize follower-bases, which is in line with how other platforms are starting to pivot away from follower based models. 

example - subs on YouTube used to be the bread and butter of the platform, but are no longer.

similarly, twitter used to be all about feeds of ppl you follow, but now it's all FYP algo of what the platform *thinks* you like.

so - back to farcaster. here the follower model is done away with in a much more aggressive way because i don't need followers to be able to post into a high-traffic channel like this one

this means that i am able to reach the public square that much more easily (follows previously curated quality as an entry barrier to people's feeds)

and when imperfect social incentives mean poor quality content is what people are most motivated to create, that poor content blows up a fantastic place like /replyguys

and the incentives mean any other successful channels will also be filled with this poor content - because the incentive means posting it to high traffic channels will net highest return

and the burden to moderate falls to the channel mod over and over again- as @tervo is understandably struggling with

in this way i think the degen tip allo game is actually directly counter to farcaster's interests, despite clearly generating volume

because not all volume is *good* volume

i could tell a ton of stories of similar events which have broken communities through my youtube career - this isn't a new issue sadly but (cont)

it's one that crypto as a whole is suffering from ENORMOUSLY right now.

i'm working with several teams in web3 gaming who are all struggling with the fact that everybody is creating fake, low quality, or mostly meaningless volume w/ growthhacks, because they "need" to in order to signal success / raise capital / etc

is it REALLY necessary? we can get into that another day

but in the meantime, i believe @dwr.eth / degen tips allo people are gonna need to very carefully map how these social incentives promote certain player behaviour (because yes, this is all a game really)

and platform level rule changes may ultimately be the fix

happy to dig into this in more depth if anyone wants to jam - i think about this stuff literally all day long when working with the teams i'm advising, and i also really feel for @tervo and everyone else having to fight against the poor quality content scourge

i think @tervo is suffering from an amplified version of this due to the success of /replyguys , and prob feels this is a problem with level of replyguy effort, but i think it's much moreso a systemic issue

I agree - even with the problems of tip farming etc, I still prefer it to ragebait for sure!

It’s so much infinitely better dealing with people spam giving away tips than it is dealing with a social algorithm that incentivizes people getting angry and saying horrible shit for attention. Degen incentives mostly good behavior.

yup - so once the algo is better, it'll learn that you're not interested and hopefully help self-select that content out of your feed

but, sadly, when algo is better, it may see other ppl's engagement as even more powerful indicator of interest and therefore amplify not suppress !

that's a nice read. I agree with you. Honestly if they're gonna game the system at least make it have substance (of course they won't 😞 ). I sometime just don't bother to reply since its the same shtick over and over again.

algo def has room to improve, you're 100% right

but this isn't only a farcaster issue either; you ever see random fight videos or rage bait in your twitter feed? this is the same problem manifest elsewhere, and just as twitter leaves users to deal with that mess, farcaster leaves channel mods to street sweep atm

I think it’s maybe about the algorithm improving and the people that wanna see talk about allowances will and the people that want to have deeper discussions will have a more nuanced TL showing those casts. It’s early and so hopefully it’s all being tweaked on the back end.

yup! lowest common denominator content is a massive struggle for platforms to reckon with, and some do it better than others for sure

to youtube's credit, i think they probably do it best right now - been fulltime there for a decade and think they have refined their systems VERY well at this point

as a monetized twitter guy, agree with your take on their algo, and the way you lay this out. 

channels are amazing and i love the idea, the whole platform really, but it seems like no matter what you go about doing, you get people who game the system at the lowest denominator. Love this type of convo ser
