When access was available, I was pleading with some of my friends to join this world. Suddenly, as soon as the invite system closed and joining became restricted to the waitlist form, they all flocked to it. The collective mindset works in mysterious ways.

Same here… The mystery looks like “offer ends today” basic marketing mechanisms and FOMO.

This sadly shows how the instinctual reactions to plenty/restricted lead to different outcomes. It often shows up to the detriment of the ideal, wherein the deprivation of a once-plenty resource increases demand for it. The invite system & waitlist are just facets of this occurrence happening every day.
