The far-right AfD — already in second place after the election — is surging in polls to become Germany’s most popular party. The country’s security services are cracking down on then AfD as an extremist group, causing a fissure with the U.S. government. Now the would-be center-right chancellor just lost the vote for his job in a virtually unprecedented political shock. 

Things are not looking good for German democracy.
