I have to admit, in the last few years being full time web3, I’m really disappointed with how we have failed to produce meaningful projects that have gone mainstream. At most, featured articles in newspapers. But that’s it. Otherwise, it’s mainly insular projects servicing a dwindling or lackadaisical audience.

to what degree do you think this is an issue of where funding is focused? seems like most investors want to fund infra and defi, as if that is what will make the space go mainstream

web3 ux is too complicated for 99% of humanity to use let alone understand. I wouldn’t expect that to change any time soon.

Mainstream doesn't care about whether the app is web3 or web2. What they do care about is if it solves a real problem for them. Unfortunately, beyond finance, there still don't seem to be any meaningful solutions people can interact with yet. Why there is no pmf yet beyond finance/infra deserves an essay.

It all comes down to the get rich quick gold rush undercut all utility. Almost every project was built to maximize “community” and hype a “brand” so people would put 💰 into a basic Ponzi scheme. For web3 to get mainstream it has to build with only utility in mind. I firmly believe that is why ETH is a winner

Not sure if David Phelps from JokerDAO is on here, but he had a good take as to why crypto (and by extension web3) have failed at gaining traction in a broader way. I'd also add that there's a barrier to entry to participating in web3 that we may be used to, but is still a step too many for most.

Sadly, real builders have lost incentive to keep on due to the audience that's left right now. What I reckon to see the problem is, it's misinformation, and reading comprehension issues from the audience. A lot of times I see information to be misunderstood.

i do not think that we lack that "invention." There are many meaningful projects that help otherwise disadvantaged people (financially/ geogpraphically etc.) transfer value, or evade draconian hunts by evil establishments. we have a "protocol awareness" as has never been so far. I think you are approaching parochially
