in tv shows the criminals break the flip phones in half and then throw them away but does that actually prevent the towers from pinging the location? is it yes bc antenna in top half?

I think it's just for the drama. Just popping out the battery would suffice to stop those old phones from pinging towers. I feel like most flip phones I remember had the antenna as a separate thing as part of the base. Maybe that's less common now.

dramatic device, nothing short of taking the SIM out & isolating it will fully address this. iirc burners have leaked info b/c operators underestimated the metadata's coverage.

i don't think the old phones were always on like new iPhones, imo they probly would stop pinging as soon as you popped the battery out it looks so cool tho
