Even if the exaggerations and fibs are not as extreme I have a private suspicion that most of recorded history is essentially false.

I'm not sure what this excerpt is in reference to, but I think premodern historians were much more honest than we give them credit for. However, the ancient world had a fundamentally different way of seeing and describing the world around them. If you take everything at face-value it will sound like a fantasy story.

I think you could make the same criticism of the "information age" we live in now.

You're right, I'm glad everyone is telling the truth and we all understand the infinite sea of information at our fingertips perfectly. Certainly having too much information to parse couldn't result in its own problems.
