The new @converseapp is really starting to feel like Telegram & WhatsApp Except it’s onchain. Not tied to my phone number. Not owned by one guy. Inbox is protected by consent. Private and not random followers. And totally portable so I can take my network with me if I ever want to leave Onchain WhatsApp 🔥🔥

It's actually not onchain, but better for the the other reasons you indicate.

as @jessepollak told me, onchain is just a metaphor for being onchain.. it's not where the messages are stored and thats a great thing for our privacy

Agree that it's better for the messages to be offchain. With due respect to you and Jesse, I think it's misleading to say XMTP is onchain when it isn't. In web3, IMO, it's especially important not to mislead, even with the best of intentions. That aside, I am a huge fan of XMTP and hope it becomes more widely adopted!

Appreciate the feedback @markcarey. It's getting into the weeds a bit, but the goal of simplifying with "onchain" is in the meaning being more about "of or related to" than something more specific. It's distinguished from "on-chain" for that reason—which was the more "literal" meaning.

@markcarey Last year as @jessepollak worked to coin the meme "onchain messaging" was something that he pointed out as a good example of where the simplicity can actually help. It is a way to quickly distinguish vs. the status quo. From Jesse: https://x.com/jessepollak/status/1680938969331105793?t=7XFlAV7B_S_4ZZnXU6wpwA
