I think China is seizing the opportunity and aiming to take the lead in shaping the future by offering a similar and powerful model (something that already exists and has been done before). Right now, what matters most is the global feedback. These responses are incredibly important and valuable because they highlight flaws that can be addressed. Whoever leads in this field will gain the upper hand. All of this assumes, of course, that China doesn’t have a more advanced version hidden away.
