"Here’s what a truly uncompassionate worldview would look like: It would throw in the towel on people and whole communities. It would lazily presume that a certain segment of the population simply can’t make it, that they require an unending stream of unsatisfying government support to grind along at subsistence levels."

In that case minimum wage would need to be a complete living wage, everyone would need access to affordable housing, and we would need an economic system that values the work of the people capitalism doesn't include in its wage system.

While I am luckily self-sufficient now, I needed social programs to survive when I was on my own at 18 and had nothing. Our systems oppress the poor, it’s not “certain groups can’t make it”, and social programs try to fight and alleviate that. Opposing them shows lack of compassion, imo.

So by this logic, its compassionate to remove social security because senior citizens are just as capable of physical labor as people in their 20's?
