In that case minimum wage would need to be a complete living wage, everyone would need access to affordable housing, and we would need an economic system that values the work of the people capitalism doesn't include in its wage system.

In my state we've seen the opposite results. SeaTac was first to go for $15 min wage and their employment numbers were healthy in result. Then Seattle and then statewide. And our employment numbers have been strong relative to the US average. I've seen similar data elsewhere. Haven't seen a lot of evidence that raising the min wage increases unemployment in practice.
As a leftist I'd also say though that's why we need an economic system that values all human beings just for being people, everyone should have an income and be able to live even if they can't work, and be able to find work if they can. It's not about a government handout it's about us as a collective people using our collective resources to take care of each other.
