A cultural trope I strongly reject is the Cult of Genius. In my life I have met perhaps one person who came close to being a true polymath, and even that person freely admitted they were ignorant about many things and only maintained high standards through an attitude of humility The fact is that no one is a genius when it comes to everything. In fact, most peoples intelligence is highly skewed in particular directions. There is a general deference towards the views in particular of people who are wealthy. Being wealthy is great and I encourage it, but it is not an ironclad guarantee that one is a general purpose expert on all matters. In fact – while sometimes it can help by giving one time to think and study – it can also become a trap if one is surrounded by professional flatterers terrified to point out blindspots. There are clearly many airheads in public discourse from all stations of life. Instead of worshipping genius we should encourage a conservative attitude of self-scrutiny and humility.

Let's add billionaires and celebrities to this discussion because we worship them too.

Worst combo is the celebrity billionaire. They’re not all bad but many are abysmal
