I’ve been using Warpcast for about a week now and my impressions so far are positive. I enjoy the platform and think that it has real potential. With this in mind I wanted to make a constructive criticism related to a particular subject: The initial follow list for new users. In theory an initial list is a good idea as it avoids the daunting experience of looking at a blank timeline. Such a list should ideally be drawn from channels that a new user indicates an interest in. Yet at present it is hard to understand the reasoning for many of the accounts included. The founders and builders of the company make sense since they can help a new user get acclimated to the platform. But many of the other names have no explanation. Many are not even active users. Are these friends? Investors? It is an ethical issue too since they stand to benefit a lot if the platform expands. I raise this point with the interest of the platform in mind. If I’m asking these questions I’m sure other new users will be in future.

Good criticism. We’re working on an improved starting feed experience that will replace this. Might ship next week.

Real talk - it’s a content supply side issue @dwr.eth has a series of casts about it somewhere, but last I checked it’s like 200+ people partially manually, partially programmatically that have been put together to optimize D30 retention with some randomness thrown in the spread it around. Some “inactive” accounts still get tons of engagement when they do cast bc they’re persons of interest (vitalik etc) so that’s why they’re in the list If you haven’t heard of them at all, they’re either in a niche you’re not familiar with but associated with the stuff you mentioned or they’re just active casters that people engage with here regardless of reach elsewhere The list will get better as the platform expands (same as it ever was), but we def have less than 1000 extremely “engaging” creators here (probably less than 100 tbh) - so it’s an immature network problem imo

if you're curious to see some more data on autofollows, we built this dashboard out with @chasesommer.eth https://dune.com/chasesommer/farcaster-auto-follow?autofollow_timediff_n29ba9=5

This issue has been brought up a lot Before, there was a pre-set list of autofollows if im not mistaking, but now it should be as you said.. Based on interest.. Still, nobody knows to what extend its accurate.. You may choose “memes” as initial interest and auto follow a low FID who used to share memes 1 year ago and now its inactive

Maybe the /poap dataset helps with this? @horsefacts.eth and I had been talking about the idea.

Great point and it's been discussed and over-discussed in the purple app. This is one of the few situations where NOT having open convos around this type of "feature" leads to frustration, FUD and even leaving the platform. PS: isn't this "feature" optional? I joined 2 years ago, it was a completely different ecosystem then...

This is where this place must change from small start up community to true social network where its not just friends and family influencing all things. This is why people complain of elitism. Am very happy influential new users speak to this. It is the only way they will change it.

EXACTLY, after seeing the list and watching someone else experience it, she found it really unpleasant and quickly unfollowed everyone who was an auto follow. Many of us have been providing this same feedback without getting any feedback from the team.

100% agree, I unfollowed a lot of the people on the initial follow list as they weren’t what I was looking for in my app experience. Find your community and build there. Congratulations on the power badge too, that makes a HUGE difference in your experience and reach here.

Others have raised similar concerns. I joined early so don't even recall the auto-follow list or whether it even existed back then but I agree there probably should be more transparency and maybe some changes in the auto-follow list over time or making it more dynamic. 1000 $farther
