The Iranian government has said that it plans to initiate military retaliation for recent Israeli assassinations in Tehran and Beirut that have targeted high ranking officials of Hamas and Hezbollah respectively. The NYT story about the killing of Ismail Haniyeh being an inside job carried out by a planted bomb (something my sources have also told me is untrue) does not seem to have carried much weight, as were it true it would seriously dissuade any externally-directed response. I am not an alarmist and am often in the "Nothing Ever Happens" camp but I do believe that we are closer than we have ever been to a major regional war involving Israel, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and the United States. After the events of the past week any idea of a ceasefire or deescalation seems farcical. Iran may try to calibrate their response to avoid a major escalation but that is a very fine line to walk. The root of all this escalation is the failure to find a Gaza ceasefire and I fear that worse could be ahead.

seems like we’re at a powder keg stage where an accord won’t be a solution nor entertained. do you think it’s reached a breaking point where an attempt at keeping peace is unobtainable?
