“The president of Bangladesh on Tuesday appointed Muhammad Yunus, a pioneer in microfinance and a Nobel laureate, to oversee an interim government, accommodating demands by protesters and offering a reprieve for a country scarred by violence. The plans for a new government were announced a day after Bangladesh’s authoritarian leader, Sheikh Hasina, resigned and fled the country amid a popular uprising.” https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/06/world/asia/bangladesh-government.html

There are probably 10+ members of the /success private group that are young students from Bangladesh. They have been sharing photos of the protests and their recent victory. I am happy for them but I know that what comes next is often the hardest part.

this makes me think that it was actually an intra-elite battle for control and that those elites opposed to hasina and her faction won the battle rather than spontaneous protest/working class lead. What do you think?

Yunus is a wise man, who has accomplished a lot. My only concern is if he has the political talent and qualities to manage this delicate situation -even if it's only a transition period. Otoh, he has international acknowledgement and status, and I hope this is also true internally.

Outside Africa, protesters make demands and their governments accommodate their demands. In Africa, protesters make demands and are shot dead by their leaders. It's crazy how things word in different parts of the world.
