@nic I think licorice is a pretty northern European thing. Very popular in northern Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark (Denmark even has a liquorice liqueur) and the whole of Scandinavia.

I remember the joy we got out of buying the licorice lolly coated in chocolate for 50 cents at the kiosk. Norther German childhood core memory.
