first i thought i was just smooth brained, but I cant find any examples on GitHub either so maybe its just not possible?......

You can look at the Optimism monorepo, which was using node modules until sometime this summer. 

Have you modified your remappings in foundry.toml?

There might also be an allow_paths property you can set in the toml file. I know it can work we ran with it that way for a while

I tried that and a text file but it seems like the issue was the fact that I was using npm for contract deps which really dosnt work that well without doing some weird stuff with the imports in node modules
