i still don't think follows will mean much soon i be out here following anything that moderately demands my support or interest even if it doesn't mean anything to me 1, 2 years out. probably will never unfollow either social networks have become content networks, content networks are too large and diverse to be non-algo driven. so imo follows mean very little compared to engagement on a content network, where as follows do mean a lot in smaller, actual social networks as more content gets produced faster, and it's good quality too, you will never be able to reasonably follow every good content creator and will just take what the algo gives you. and following/unfollowing is an unknown variable in how the algo works so it's not really a lever you can effectively pull. like X has a way to mark "not interested in stuff like this" rather than just having you unfollow so whether content is good or bad, follows don't mean much in an algo driven world. i do think it means a lot as an expression of a relationship

I think this under sells the relationship. There is already effectively infinite content, and if you just want to scrap that you can. But in a participatory text based environment, who you are interacting with matters.

yes i agree with that but there is definitely a limit to the number of relationships you can maintain, so i don't think it can grow beyond that. and that's fine, that's the "social" part of the social network following influencers, meme accounts, etc is you following for content which i think would not really matter once algos get good enough (or so uncontrollable and tiring that you accept them and give up trying to tune it)
