The other crazy thing is that banana trees aren’t woody at all. You can cut them down with a single machete swing, but they have these crazy long square ties running through the herbaceous stems that make them super strong.

I don’t have the freedom to dig it up now, but another relevant fact is that “woodiness” has evolved separately at least dozen times among different evolutionary lines! (if I remember correctly)
