as much as I don't love US gun culture, I also don't feel safe in my home in canada and can't legally own *any* firearm to protect myself or my family. and to add salt to the wound, you also risk prosecution for defending yourself against home invasion or other intruders.

tbh I haven’t really looked into it seriously (yet) but my understanding is that pretty much all common guns are banned for purchase at this time. if you already own one, I believe the gov has a buyback program. some context here: https://nationalpost.com/opinion/gage-haubrich-the-gun-ban-is-not-working-trudeau-already-knows-this

Sorry but... you can totally buy/own guns in Canada? You just need a license. The ban is about specific disallow lists of models of guns.

I get the castle doctrine, but making people think twice about blowing someone's brains onto their driveway isn't a terrible plan either. I like that Canada has relatively little gun violence. If you have it ingrained in your head that you have the god given right to take someones life, even just at home, I think that can leak into your general outlook, and reduces the internal friction to take someones life in other instances as well.

definitely, agreed that there is some nuance I also appreciate the lack of gun violence but would like to not fear repercussions for defending against home invasion

I get it. I also don't want my kids getting shot for toilette papering their asshole teachers trees. I own multiple guns. Mostly for hunting and bear protection, but you never know when they might come in handy. I also own a secluded, defendable off-grid cabin downriver I can float to... so you are preaching to the paranoid choir ;)
