Fascinating Planet Money podcast episode on the Oscars campaign trail. I naively thought Oscars were heavily meritocratic but it's more related to huge campaigns that studios put on (can be tens of millions of $ on a movie) https://www.npr.org/2024/03/08/1197958441/oscars-academy-awards-campaign-for-your-consideration

It was so weird to me to visit LA and see all these billboards of movies/shows released over a year ago they were “for your consideration” (award voters) and not potential viewers
