Why Priority mode matters LLMs make it easy to create more sophisticated spam. Look at the example below. It will only get worse. Programmatic DDoS of attention at scale. Priority mode by default ensures that only users you follow or with a globally recognized relevance, i.e. Power Badge, will break through.

Isn’t this counterproductive to onboarding new users? Shouldn’t we want new users to be able to be heard without spending significant time here first? When I had priority mode on, I was missing so many legitimate humans who were struggling to be heard. I’ve heard from countless people who were ready to give up.

At the expense of everyone else getting spammed? :) You have to solve both problems. Most new users lurk. 90/9/1 Rotating to making new good accounts more discoverable.

Very fair, & I know it’s challenging to account for. Maybe the requirements for a power badge can be tweaked or algorithms adjusted to help new accounts. I was this close [__] to giving up on FC after my first few weeks here. Just casting to myself. I’m not saying that I have the answer, just asking questions.

How would you tweak it? The algo is basic: inbound engagement to an account from other power badge users.

I guess I would have to understand better how non-badge content is propagated. Is non badge holder casts displayed just as freely as badge holder casts? Is it by channel? Also, how are people supposed to create connections with badge holders (through replying) - when badge holders likely can’t see their comments?

You can read about it here. Challenge is there is no deterministic way to figure out if a new user is good vs. bad in a world of LLMs. Only based on engagement from others. But people don't want to see spam. :) https://warpcast.notion.site/Priority-mode-7a9bccacc1474ccbba1e58dd2bec2dd3
