This might be a stupid question, but it’s one I’ve been thinking about a lot. 

Do I actually own my Warpcast channels? If I wanted to specify channel ownership in a will, could I? Would it just belong to the beneficiary of my estate as long as they could access my account?

Oh damn, I thought it had already happened. So, when it does happen, then we own our channels? 

Cause, we would still have to pay for the annual storage fee right?

Ya know, I should probably just do the research into the plan as I haven't ever read it fully and it actually matters to me now. :P

Nope. Channel decentralization phase 2 hasn't been completed yet. Channels aren't on chain and there's nothing to own yet. Sooooooon.

I guess what I'm really asking is if Warpcast/Merkle technically own the channels or we do?

At this point, I'm viewing my account and my channels as business assets.  Buying storage, paying for channels, etc. all business expenses.  Because my business *is* being a content creator - has been for a decade.

So yes, I do think that channel ownership could be passed along to a beneficiary - though much like *any* business entity, you'd want to be sure the beneficiary was someone who could continue your vision for the business.

Well, the rent is 25$/year and there's no option to extend yet afaik

Decentralizing channels work in progress

We're planning a 2 phase migration for decentralizing channels:

1. Clean up Warpcast-only channel features — next week or so
2. Decentralize into the protocol — 2-3 months

I think they mean decentralized as in 'anyone can own one' in this case. 

Wake has clarified that we aren't in that phase of the protocol yet, but when we get there, I wonder what that means for this question.

Channels are not really ours and the goal behind channels is to get as decentralized as possible

Well, they recently changed the terminology from host to owner when they decentralized. It may not be reflected in the documentation yet, but I think this is what it meant. 

I think I even remember Dan referring to them as channel owners recently, but can't find it in a search.

The fact that Warpcast refers to you has a ‘host’ of a channel that pays a fee, I am confident the answer to your question is no you are not the owner and cannot transfer it - you host a specific part of your feed.

Right, but assuming they continue to pay for it, would it belong to them or does it still belong to Warpcast?

In fact i think we don't own our profile or ens ( anyone who has it ) too. We are just renting them. So i think if we dont pay the yearly fee we dont have any access to to them

If this happen, so basically channel is like irl place or coffee shop then, we can hang out or etc. 🤔

There’s no third party thriving clients.

Third party client devs’ requests and wishes (like decentralizating channels) have been deprioritized for months and thus they cannot permissionlessly innovate, nor compete meaningfully on many aspects.

Have you changed your mind since writing this @dwr.eth, or is Farcaster no good?
