I don’t think that’s the whole story though. I think new users that come here and try to grow struggle to be seen 🤷‍♂️ They don’t get enough initial engagement to feel as though they are valued on the platform

They are focused on continuing to give visibility only to the usual ones, and that's the big problem. They have all those users with the PB active (they promised it would disappear by the end of August), and it's as if this app is only for them since the same people always appear in trending.

Hmm I don’t think that’s the whole story either. People with large followings get engagement because they’ve built their audience through their marketing skills. Algorithms will always inherently promote that content because it performs well, which is good for the network. That’s also why they trend, because they get more engagement due to a higher following count. I think we need more “boosts” like they’ve been giving out, that gives people a chance to get more exposure than their following would allow for on a regular basis

The people who appear in the trending casts are always the same. If the algorithm is constantly benefiting and showcasing the same ones, why are the rest of us here, swimming in the dark? If the algorithm is already “helping” those who don’t need “help,” it’s just closing the circle, and if this keeps up, in the end, they’ll be the only ones left. Plus, they should remove the PB once and for all, not just hide it. That would improve things a bit because the algorithm wouldn’t be so focused on them. But they’re not interested in doing that.

oh tbh, I almost never look at trending, usually it's been botted or some type of frame that gets the most (at least from what I see) I don't think algorithms are incentivized to show low-performing posts though, it's not about helping one group or another. It's about helping people connect with value. For those who contribute value to the network, they should receive value in return. It becomes less of an issue of algorithmic problems and more one of marketing 🤷‍♂️ which is the same as it was in web2. the majority of people get the majority of their value from bigger accounts, because those accounts have found a way to market their value in a way that the majority prefers I'm not saying this is the best solution, merely that it's the status quo. The power badge is more of an indicator of who is connecting with the high value people in the network, which extends that value. it's tough to get outside of that with so few people in the overall network

This has nothing to do with the quality of the posts. It’s about the type of users interacting with them. What might seem high-quality content to you could be completely uninteresting to me, & vice versa. The value of a post shouldn’t be determined by the status or ranking of the people engaging with it. But that’s exactly where the algorithm is failing—it’s driving away new users & the rest of us who post content that may not appeal to the “big names” but could be valuable to many others. The way the system is set up, if your post doesn’t catch the attention of a certain group of people, it’s almost like it doesn’t exist. It’s frustrating because no matter how much effort you put into what you share, if you’re not in the right circles or have the right followers, your content stays hidden. This approach just keeps us all in the shadows, making it harder to grow or be seen by a wider audience. It’s not a fair or balanced way to encourage meaningful engagement across the platform

How do you think the value of a post should be determined in a social network, if not using the engagement of the post? Genuine question, it’s something I think about a lot. Agreed that the power badges are not the best way; i think a bigger issue is the hiding of replies by accounts that are deemed spam. My hope is the update to channels enables better moderation of content within each channel, which gives micro algorithmic control to the community itself, rather than a global algorithm

It is difficult but no impossible. Instead of just looking at numbers, they could focus on the quality of interactions, like if people are leaving thoughtful comments or having real conversations, that should count for more. They could also check how long a post stays relevant, seeing if people are still engaging with it weeks or months later. I see the frustration there. Here’s the translation: I consider the Power Badge a real problem because it gives visibility to those accounts, leaving the rest of us in the shadows. I’ve had the PB on two occasions, and the experience here is completely different. They said they would remove it, and I was eager to see how things would work without it, but they haven’t followed through on what they said, and the PB is still active, pushing the rest of us aside. And the same thing happens with all those hidden responses that are even more valuable than many of the PB ones. Honestly, it’s a mess.

Ahh but “quality” and “thoughtfulness” are often subjective, and impossible to gauge automatically - an essential component to building an algorithm so that it has to have set rules to distinguish one post from the next. It’s easily confused with chatgpt spam bots, so I think we can’t use quality as a measurement of how to hide or show people. Too easy to game. I completely agree that we need more visibility for new users, and that the power badge system does not operate in a way favourable to them. That said, I think the issue of identifying humans is much more complicated than you would think, especially when trying to scale, which is where farcaster and Warpcast are at now. It needs automated systems (algorithms)
