OK, so Boeing is famously falling apart largely because it has outsourced too much of its manufacturing processes, and lost the ability to control quality. Does outsourcing always have that result? Are there examples of organizations that have done this successfully, and what distinguishes them?

Someone else mentioned Apple as a counter example? The iPhone would arguably be impossible without outsourcing.

I'm not familiar with the iPhone development. Did they outsource the design or?

Not design, just manufacturing. A few things I recall: Glass is from Corning Chips from TSMC Assembly by FoxConn
