actually I‘d also like to know what Twitter participation rates are. My anecdotal idea is that quasi nobody is very online in Europa compared to US. My feeling is in Europa more ppl are on LinkedIn than on Twitter and vice versa in US. Can anyone back this up lol?

Same here, most of my EU friends consider Twitter an "American thing"

Sure, because Twitter is English based, if you don't know English you are cut out from 95% of the contents. In Europe, even in the scenario in which you know English your best friend doesn't so you don't have friend to follow or interact with there. Probably there are English mistakes in my message, but you got it

I don't think that's the case. In Europe, most people know English well enough to use Twitter. Let alone young people :) https://www.statista.com/statistics/990547/countries-in-europe-for-english/

Yeah agree with Mac on this, I think it's not just about English There's also the fact that Europeans are used to a over-formalised communications (titles, greetings, salutations & whatnot) You notice this in emails, which are used like text messages in the US - blackberry could never have taken off in EU lol
