Ahh I had no idea web buttons were often that very specific resolution. I tried looking up a history for it but can't find anything. It's oddly specific!

Geocities started the format, or at least their graphic "button" was adopted by users and spread wide, funny how it was a standard in commercial banner rotation networks internationally too. I saw these in Japanese, European and Russian webrings and networks.

the first 88x31 that appears in the internet archive is this one on the netscape site but the archives are spotty and the timeline is hazy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe Netscape was the first. My memory of those days is hazy but I do recall seeing these Netscape buttons.
