i have a lot of feelings but i'm on no sleep and since i'm casting in this channel i'll keep it on topic: i've been posting more doomer content lately even tho i'd rather focus on good things. but now i expect the enshittification of the web to accelerate. the democrats aren't really better for the web but they are less distracting. when the firehose of trump's shitshow turns on again in january, many will be too distracted daily like last time to do productive things to prevent further enshittifying. it's no coincidence the death date of the internet is often cited as 2016/2017. now he has elon as a sidekick too, so it will be doubly as annoying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ not sure what that means for this channel. "A channel for Very Internet Persons to discuss net culture, intermedia, and having fun online." seems frivolous now as i'm not sure online will be very fun for a while and i'll have to spend more time offline working to insulate my loved ones from the "hardship" that elon is promising. i hope i'm wrong tho

I think this is wrong. I think technological flourishing will increase.

oh i don't doubt that some technology will flourish. i'm talking more specifically non-commercial internet. 2016/2017 is noted as the death date of the internet bc with trump in power, any resistance to corporations cementing their dominance over the web evaporated. and with the type of control they were able to seize, they no longer had to satisfy users and could degrade their services (ie. enshittify) without worry i think the technologies that will flourish under trump are the ones that align most with trump's/gop brand – ie. hyperfinancialized extraction tech, surveillance tech, social discord tech. and in general, consolidation of technology into fewer hands. those are all things i'm not interested in at all, and especially surveillance, i'm vehemently opposed to – so that's why i'm feeling like peacing out for the next 4 years or more

You are talking about net neutrality. The leftists were wrong about that. It was the opposite of what they claimed. None of their doomer predictions panned out. Repealing it was the right move.

no, net neutrality is a buzzword that doesn't mean anything anymore. it's been reduced to politicking and empty signalling. like u said it was repealed by trump and then reinstated by biden this april and not much happened either way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i don't think net neutrality regulation is the way. i believe "net neutrality" is just an ideal. and when u allow silos to emerge on the internet that create a filtered internet for ppl that they then become dependent on, things are falling short of that ideal
